New Debt Support Service Introduced

Fri, 14 Aug 2009

A new debt helpline and website service has been launched by the Debt Advice Foundation to offer support for those suffering financial difficulties .

The move comes in response to new data which shows that the number of people turning to individual voluntary arrangements (IVAs) or bankruptcy soared by 27.4 per cent in the three months to June 30, compared with the same period last year.

The Debt Advice Foundation is looking to work with councils and community groups to promote the service as an alternative option to commercial debt management providers.

Dennis Benson, chairman of the debt charity, said: "As the recession bites, the number of people facing debt problems is rising, with personal insolvencies now at a record high."

"Traditional support services are struggling to cope with increasing demand. Money Advice Trust, the government-backed debt support agency, has predicted that half of the people expected to be seeking debt advice this year are unlikely to get an appointment with a debt charity .

The Debt Advice Foundation’s new telephone helpline - 0800 2922077 - is operated by trained counsellors, who assess caller’s financial situation, help set up an appropriate solution for their circumstances and negotiate with lenders on their behalf.

The charity’s online service can be found at debtadvicefoundation.org.
