Torbay Residents To Be Offered High Street Debt Support And Advice

Charities and voluntary groups in South Devon have received almost £170,000 to boost their efforts in helping people cope with their debts and other financial issues .

The Torbay Targeted Support Fund handed out a total of £165,905 to seven local organisations.

Just under £40,000 of the funds has gone towards setting up the first high street Credit Union in Torbay, which will provide an affordable lending and saving service for local residents who are struggling to access banking services. It will also provide a financial advice shop for issues such as debt .

Helen Ejsmont, manager of the Devonlane Credit Union in nearby Kingsbridge, said: "The grant is fantastic as it means we'll be able to give people a real alternative to doorstep lenders and change the culture of how they spend and save.

"Being on the high street means we'll be able to offer our services alongside the major banks . It will make a real difference to many people in Torbay who are struggling with financial problems ."

Charity Homestart Torbay has received more than £10,000 to recruit and train new volunteers to work with families and parents of children under five who are struggling to cope with the recession.

Other South Devon organisations which have received grants include counselling and advice group Relate - South Devon; Cool Recovery which provides support for those with mental health problems and their families and friends; Hele Village Community Association and STEPS charity which is providing training and work experience for local people with disabilities and learning difficulties .
