New Debt Helpline Available To North East Residents

Mon, 19 Apr 2010

A new debt helpline has been launched in the North East to help expand the level of support available to people in the region.

The telephone service has been set up by debt charity Citizens Advice to offer specialist support to an extra 8,000 people across the North East.

The debt advice line (0300 333 3445) is available to anyone who has a debt problem and is free to call from most landlines and mobile phones .

Advice is provided by three full-time telephone debt advisers, in addition to a team of 13 face-to-face advisers based at Citizens Advice Bureaux.

The new service, which is available on weekdays between 9am and 5pm, was only given the go-ahead after receiving a £1.5m injection from the Northern Rock Foundation.

Nick Bussey, Citizens Advice North area Director, commented: "The recession has had a big impact and we have seen a sharp increase in demand for advice on debt and other related issues."

"This funding boost will help us to reach more people who are struggling and make sure they get the practical and personalised advice they need."
