Struggling Homeowners To Be Offered Free Debt Advice
Fri, 08 Jan 2010
Struggling homeowners in "repossession hotspots" across England are to receive help with managing their finances and coping with debt under a new government scheme.
Housing Minister John Healey has teamed up with financial advice charity Citizens Advice to organise a series of local events that will offer families free face-to-face advice and impartial information about how to avoid having their homes taken from them.
Events will take place in the 56 areas of the country identified as being at greater risk of home repossessions due to high levels of unemployment and repossession court orders .
Announcing the scheme, Mr Healey said: "Many families will have money worries after Christmas, and when they are under pressure with their finances, the worst thing they can do is put off the problem.
"I want homeowners to know there's free help with their mortgage, by phone, website and local money advice agencies.
"I'm extending free advice services into next year with £4m in extra Government cash, and we're running a series of local events in 56 repossession hotspots, so face-to-face help is also on hand where it is most needed.
Times and details of the financial advice sessions will be made available later this month. Free, impartial advice is also available online at www.direct.gov.uk/mortgagehelp or by calling the National Debtline on 0808 8084000.
