Debt Charity Taking More Calls From Renters With Eviction Concerns
Fri, 25 Jun 2010
An increasing number of people living in rented accommodation are seeking debt help, according to the Consumer Credit Counselling Service (CCCS).
The UK debt charity said it has seen a considerable hike in the number of calls from renters worried about the prospect of eviction because they cannot afford to pay their rent.
The CCCS said previously most calls related to advice on avoiding eviction were from homeowners rather than renters.
However, the charitys debt experts are now dealing with more cases from people living in privately rented or social housing who are struggling to meet their rent obligations.
Laura Carver, CCCS helpline manager said: "Up until now, almost all of those calling for help in staying in their homes were owners who were struggling to keep up with their mortgages ."
"We have been surprised by the sudden rise in people in rented accommodation phoning us for help with eviction ."
She added: "While we have always had more people in rented accommodation calling for help with their debts, they have usually been able to maintain their rent payments."
"This suggests that the personal finance situation for those in rented accommodation is deteriorating to the extent that they many end up homeless."
The charity urged people who live in rented housing to focus on paying rent before any non-priority debts .
