More Debt Help Enquiries Coming From Men Than Women

Fri, 11 Jun 2010

More men are seeking help with debt problems than woman, according to debt charity the Consumer Credit Counselling Service (CCCS).

The CCCS said that male workers tend to earn more than their female counterparts and have decreasing levels of debt . However, they also seem to be less able to stay out of the red.

CCCS chairman Malcolm Hurlston said: "Men have been hard hit by the recession and are emerging as the new underclass. Debt alone is no longer the problem; it is loss of income and other rising costs."

"This deterioration in the economic circumstances for men, still the main breadwinner in most homes, has serious implications for many households."

The organisation added that nearly half (48 per cent) of the male debtors they deal with blame their financial situation on increased household expenditure and a reduction in income caused by redundancy or unemployment .

Figures released last week by Credit Action showed that the average UK adult owes £30,228 (including mortgages ), while the average household debt is currently £57,915.
