Charity Handles Over 93,000 Calls For Debt Advice In Q1

The Consumer Credit Counselling Service (CCCS), one of the leading debt charities in the UK, has revealed that it received more than 93,000 calls for help with debt problems in the first three months of 2010.

According to the group, the first quarter enquiries figure is nearly 25 per cent higher than the number of calls made by struggling debtors during the same period last year.

In total, the CCCS received some 335,323 debt help calls in 2009, and it expects the total number for 2010 to be even higher.

Steven Jackson of the debt advice service said. "These figures show that the number of people who need help with debt continues to dramatically increase."

"However, formal government statistics out this week will not show the full picture as many thousands of people who are struggling but have not formally declared themselves insolvent are not included".

Meanwhile, new data from Credit Action shows that total UK personal debt stood at a staggering £1,460 billion at the end of March, with Britons owing more than what the whole country produces in a year.

According to the charity, the average UK household owes £8,796 (excluding mortgages ) and pays an average of £2,692 a year in interest on their outstanding debt .
