Debt Advice Enquiries Soaring In Jersey

Thu, 20 May 2010

Debt is becoming a growing concern for people in Jersey, with new figures showing the number of people seeking advice about debt rocketed by 53 per cent last year.

The latest annual report from Jersey's Citizens Advice Bureau (CAB) showed inquiries for debt advice totalled 1,264 in 2009. It also revealed that the average client was some £21,500 in debt .

Lynda Taylor, a debt advice caseworker for the CAB, said: "The people who get into debt are from all walks of life, single people, families, even the elderly as well - it's a case of it can hit anyone."

CAB manager Francis Le Gresley said the growing debt problem in Jersey is largely due to the recession, and that the island’s government is not focusing enough on issues caused by the downturn.

Mr Le Gresley commented: "I think it's the perception that the States of Jersey maybe should be addressing some of the issues caused by the recession to the man in the street."

"We cite, for example, youth unemployment which is a very big problem and will increase this summer when our current students leave school."

"Those are the sort of issues that we feel at the bureau should be receiving high priority."
