Over 60s Missing Out On Simple Online Debt Advice
Thu, 27 May 2010
Britains older generation is missing out on crucial debt advice because they are apprehensive about going online to seek help, the Consumer Credit Counselling Service (CCCS) has revealed.
The debt charity said the number of people who used its online counselling service (CCCS Debt Remedy) to help deal with debt problems increased to 153,000 last year. However, only three per cent of those who took advantage of the tool were aged 60 and over.
The CCCS said online debt counselling is an important way for anyone embarrassed about their problem to seek help anonymously and at a time that best suits them.
Paula Searle, head of E-Services at CCCS said: "Although people should seek help in the medium where they are most comfortable, I am concerned that older people should not miss out on any of our services."
"CCCS Debt Remedy is simple to use, it has the advantage of being there when you need it, it is anonymous and there is telephone support available from 8am to 8pm if you need help using it."
The CCCS said people over the age of 60 tend to have higher debt levels with regular changes in income due to changes in circumstance, illness or retirement .
The charity recently extended its range of debt support services by launching a free equity release advice service (CCCS Equity Release ).
