Debt worries as energy prices rise again

Fri, 22 Jul 2011

British families may be worrying about debt levels after it was revealed that yet another energy provider is to significantly increase its prices.

Scottish and Southern Energy's decision to inflate customers' costs will see the average bill jump to £1,265 per year - a £170 annual rise, confused.com reported.

Energy analyst at the website Lisa Greenfield explained that these prices are particularly worrying after recent data showed that 5.5 million British homes were thought to be in fuel poverty in 2009.

"This figure is going to be much higher by the end of 2011," she said. "If you're concerned about the rising cost of energy, you should consider opting for a fixing or capped tariff, which will give you security against any further hikes."

The expert urged Brits worried about debt to consider paying by direct debit and look for ways to cut energy use, including subsidised insulation deals or home generation.

Confused.com recently reported a 2,000 per cent surge in visitor numbers after British Gas also raised its rates.
